Whether you’re a local family looking for a magical afternoon or visitors from further afield, we’re delighted to welcome you to the Foss Fairy Trail! Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your time with us.
📍 Where to Find Us
The Foss Fairy Trail runs alongside the River Foss in Heworth Without, York. You can enter the trail from multiple points, but the most common starting point is A1036, Heworth, York YO31 8RP near the bridge. Look out for the fairy signposts!
Parking
The nearest parking can be found at Monk Bar Car Park off Lord Mayors Walk. Please do not park without permission in any of the local pub carparks, these are for patrons only.
If you’re cycling, there are some places on the trail to safely lock up your bike near the entrance.
🕰️ When to Visit
The trail is open all year round and free to access. It’s a self-guided walk, so you can come and go as you please.
Best Times to Visit:
- Spring and Summer: Enjoy the wildflowers, buzzing bees, and a full trail of fairy houses.
- Autumn: Look out for fungi and falling leaves—there’s a special kind of magic in the crisp air.
- Winter: Some fairy houses may be tucked away, but the trail remains open and peaceful.
🥾 What to Bring
- Sturdy shoes or wellies (especially after rain—it can get muddy)
- A water bottle and snacks (there are no cafés or shops on the trail itself)
- A camera for fairy spotting 📸
- Bug spray in summer and a warm coat in winter
Dogs are welcome but please clean up after them.
♻️ Trail Etiquette
The Foss Fairy Trail is cared for by volunteers, so we kindly ask you to:
- Leave no trace – take any rubbish home with you
- Stay on the path to protect local wildlife
- Be gentle with the fairy houses (they’re quite shy and delicate!)
- Say hello to other walkers – is part of the trail magic
🧚 Accessibility
The trail follows a natural riverside path. Some areas are uneven or narrow, and may be challenging for prams or wheelchairs – though there are flatter sections. We’re working to improve accessibility over time.
